Wet and Wild Monday Ahead

Boston residents are waking up to a soggy and turbulent start to the work week this Monday, March 16, 2026. A powerful weather system moving through the region is bringing a double threat of heavy precipitation and damaging winds. The National Weather Service has issued multiple alerts for the Greater Boston area, urging commuters and residents to exercise caution as conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly throughout the day.

Morning: Fog and Developing Showers

The morning hours will begin with overcast skies and patchy fog, particularly near the coast and Logan International Airport. Temperatures will start in the low 40s, steadily climbing as a warm front pushes into the region. Light rain is expected to develop before the morning commute is over, with showers becoming more consistent between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. While the early hours may only see light drizzle, the atmosphere will be priming itself for more significant activity by midday.

Afternoon: Unseasonable Warmth and Thunderstorms

By the early afternoon, Boston will see an unusual spike in temperatures, reaching a high near 63°F. However, this warmth comes at a cost. After 11:00 AM, the risk of thunderstorms increases significantly. These storms may produce locally heavy downpours, leading to rapid rises in small streams and urban flooding. Winds will shift to the southeast at 11 to 14 mph, with gusts reaching up to 31 mph during the peak of the afternoon. Commuters should prepare for reduced visibility and potential hydroplaning on major routes like I-95 and the Mass Pike.

Evening and Night: High Wind and Flood Alerts

The most dangerous portion of the forecast arrives this evening. Two major alerts are currently in effect for the City of Boston:

  • Flood Watch: In effect until 8:00 AM Tuesday. Total rainfall is expected to reach between 0.5 and 1.0 inch, with higher amounts possible in areas that experience prolonged thunderstorms.
  • High Wind Watch: In effect from 5:00 PM this evening through 6:00 AM Tuesday. Sustained south winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with the potential for damaging gusts up to 60 mph.

As the sun sets at approximately 6:51 PM, the combination of heavy rain and high winds could lead to downed tree limbs and isolated power outages across Suffolk County. Residents are advised to secure outdoor furniture and ensure that storm drains near their properties are clear of debris.

Looking Ahead

The cold front responsible for this turmoil is expected to clear the region by early Tuesday morning. Behind the front, temperatures will plummet back toward seasonal norms, with a low of 41°F tonight and a much cooler, though sunnier, Tuesday following the storm's exit.
