Cold Emergency and Blue Line Shutdown Create Challenging Saturday Commute

Boston residents are advised to exercise extreme caution and limit travel today, Saturday, January 24, 2026, as a combination of a major winter storm, a declared Cold Emergency, and extensive MBTA service suspensions create significant hurdles for the weekend commute. Mayor Wu has officially declared a Cold Emergency through Sunday, January 25, as a powerful winter storm moves across the Northeast. While the heaviest snowfall is anticipated for Sunday evening, roads are already becoming slick, and dangerously cold temperatures are affecting both public transit infrastructure and roadway safety.

Major MBTA Disruptions and Blue Line Closure

The most significant disruption for commuters today is the full suspension of Blue Line service between Bowdoin and Orient Heights. This closure, which was extended earlier this week due to the frigid weather forecast, is necessary for critical tunnel inspections. Travelers should note the following service alternatives:

  • Free Shuttle Buses: Buses are replacing train service between Orient Heights and Haymarket. Note that shuttle buses will not provide direct service to Bowdoin, Government Center, State, or Aquarium stations.
  • Accessible Vans: For those needing to reach Government Center, State, or Aquarium, accessible vans are available upon request via MBTA station personnel or call boxes.
  • Free Ferry Service: The East Boston Ferry is operating a fare-free schedule today from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, with departures every 30 minutes, providing a vital alternative for those crossing the harbor.
  • Free Fare Gates: To mitigate delays, fare gates are open and free at several stations, including Airport, Wood Island, Orient Heights, and Wonderland.

Elsewhere on the T, the Red Line is also experiencing significant diversions, with shuttle buses replacing service between Broadway and the Ashmont/North Quincy branches. Commuters using the Orange Line should be aware of ongoing renovations at Jackson Square, where the south-end stairway remains closed.

Road Conditions and Construction Detours

On the roads, MassDOT reports that the Canterbury Street Bridge in the Hyde Park and Roslindale area remains closed to all vehicular traffic until further notice following a recent bridge inspection. Drivers are being diverted via Hyde Park Avenue and Cummins Highway. While the Sumner Tunnel is currently open and substantially complete after its multi-year restoration, drivers should expect increased congestion on Route 1A and the Ted Williams Tunnel as Blue Line riders shift to personal vehicles.

Due to the active winter storm, many scheduled Saturday events have been canceled. Public works crews are currently treating major arteries for ice, but the combination of freezing rain and wind makes for hazardous visibility. Commuters are encouraged to budget an additional 40 to 60 minutes for any essential travel today.
