City Council Convenes for Major Contract and Policy Decisions

The Boston City Council is scheduled to meet today, Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at 12:00 PM in the Iannella Chamber at City Hall. The session features a packed agenda with 66 dockets, ranging from multi-million dollar labor agreements to significant changes in city governance and public safety policy.

High-Stakes Labor Contracts

At the forefront of today’s session is the expected approval of a four-year, $90 million contract with the Boston Firefighters Local 718. The agreement, covering fiscal years 2025 through 2028, includes base wage increases and significant payouts from the collective bargaining reserve fund. Additionally, the Council is slated to vote on a three-year, $4.4 million contract for the Boston Association of School Supervisors and Administrators.

Debate Over New Council Rules

For the second time, the Council will attempt to finalize its 2026-2027 rules of operation. This follows previous disagreements over restrictions on debate and the role of committees in the budget process. The outcome of this vote will define how the legislative body functions for the remainder of the term, including how members interact with the Mayor’s office and manage floor discussions.

Snow Removal and Public Safety Initiatives

Following recent winter weather concerns, several councilors have filed orders aimed at improving the city’s response to snow. Highlights include:

  • Proposals for the city to investigate the purchase of industrial snow-melting machines.
  • A hearing order to discuss the potential creation of a "snow corps" to assist with clearing sidewalks and public pathways.
  • An ordinance from District 7 to prohibit the use of Boston city property for civil immigration enforcement activities by federal agencies.

School Committee and Community Oversight

Later this afternoon, the Boston School Committee will hold a virtual meeting at 5:30 PM to discuss ongoing district priorities. Earlier today, the state’s Prequalification Committee met to review municipal determinations, and the Commission on Black Men and Boys is scheduled to hold a community meeting at 7:00 PM at the Bruce C. Bolling Building in Roxbury to gather public input on local service provision.
