A short-lived taste of spring for Greater Boston

Parts of eastern Massachusetts were forecast to reach around 70 degrees as a burst of unseasonably warm air moved through the region, setting up one of the warmest days in months for Boston and several inland communities. The warm-up was projected to be most noticeable away from the immediate coastline, where onshore influences typically keep temperatures lower.

In Boston, the day’s peak was expected to approach 70 degrees, which would mark the city’s first 70-degree reading since Oct. 8. Early-day temperatures were already well above freezing, with readings in the upper 40s in Boston during the morning hours.

Where the warmest readings were expected

Forecasters indicated that the highest temperatures would favor inland areas, including MetroWest and the Merrimack Valley, with some communities expected to push into the low to mid-70s. A light southwesterly wind was expected to help limit sea-breeze cooling and allow warmer air to extend closer to the immediate Boston area than on a typical early-spring day.

  • Boston: near 70 degrees

  • Inland suburbs (MetroWest/Merrimack Valley): low to mid-70s possible

  • Cape Cod and the Islands: cooler conditions expected, closer to the 50s

Near-record warmth and what it means

The potential for near-record warmth underscored the magnitude of the temperature swing for early March. In Boston, the record high for the date was identified as 71 degrees, set in the 1800s, placing the day’s forecast within striking distance of a long-standing mark. Nearby locations were also expected to challenge local daily records.

Daily temperature records are tied to calendar dates and can be approached or exceeded during brief surges of warm air, even during otherwise cool seasons.

Cooldown arrives quickly: clouds, showers, then a wintry finish to the week

The springlike conditions were expected to be temporary. A backdoor front—cooler air advancing from the northeast—was forecast to move in the following day, leading to a marked drop in temperatures and an increase in clouds. Patchy fog and drizzle were possible early, with cooler daytime highs expected across the North Shore and other coastal areas.

By midweek, an approaching system was expected to bring a better chance of showers. As colder air follows the passage of a front later in the week, forecasters said some wet snowflakes could mix in late Thursday, although no accumulation was anticipated. Looking ahead, temperatures were expected to settle back closer to seasonal levels for the weekend, with highs generally in the 40s and mainly dry conditions before another wetter period could return late Sunday into Monday.
