Boston University edges American 75-73 in Patriot League quarterfinal, advances to face Navy Sunday
A late shot decides a back-and-forth Patriot League tournament game in Boston
Boston University advanced in the Patriot League men’s basketball tournament on Thursday, March 5, holding off American University 75-73 in a quarterfinal at Case Gym. The win moved the fourth-seeded Terriers into the semifinals against top-seeded Navy on Sunday, March 8.
The quarterfinal was defined by constant momentum shifts rather than long runs. The teams traded 22 lead changes, with Boston University leading for most of the night and carrying a 40-36 advantage into halftime. American stayed within striking distance throughout the second half, setting up a final minute in which both teams had chances to take control.
Gladden’s late jumper, Defty’s all-around line
Freshman guard Chance Gladden delivered the decisive basket, hitting a step-back jumper in the closing seconds after Boston University had the ball with 16 seconds remaining. Gladden finished with 16 points as one of four Terriers to reach double figures.
Ben Defty, a 7-foot sophomore, produced Boston University’s most complete statistical performance: 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Donte Tisinger Jr. added 13 points and Michael McNair scored 12, giving the Terriers balanced scoring that helped offset the game’s tight margins.
The closing sequence reflected the broader pattern: neither team created separation, and execution in one possession ultimately determined the outcome.
Efficiency and turnovers shaped the numbers
Boston University’s edge came from shot-making and perimeter efficiency. The Terriers shot 60% from the field (32-of-53) and hit 10 three-pointers on 19 attempts (53%). American shot 52% overall (31-of-60) but struggled from three-point range, going 5-of-22 (23%).
American attempted more free throws (9 to Boston University’s 2), but the Terriers compensated by creating higher-value scoring through three-point accuracy and a 14-9 assist advantage.
