Mayor Wu Declares Cold Emergency for Boston

Mayor Michelle Wu has officially declared a cold emergency for the City of Boston, effective from Friday, January 23, through Sunday, January 25, 2026. With arctic temperatures arriving, wind chills are forecasted to drop as low as -10 to -35 degrees Fahrenheit. Residents are urged to take immediate precautions to stay safe during this extreme weather event.

In response to the dangerous conditions, the following public service measures have been activated:

  • Warming Centers: Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) have activated warming centers at various community locations. These facilities will remain open during their normal operating hours to provide a safe, heated environment for residents in need.
  • Emergency Shelter: Homeless individuals are encouraged to seek shelter. The city is working with local providers to ensure expanded capacity during the overnight hours.
  • Safety Checks: Residents are asked to check on elderly neighbors and those with limited mobility. If you see someone in need of assistance or stuck outside, please call 911 immediately.

Final Day for Health Insurance Open Enrollment

Today, Friday, January 23, marks the final day of the Massachusetts Open Enrollment period for 2026 health insurance. The Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) reminds all residents that this is the last opportunity to apply for or change health and dental coverage through the Massachusetts Health Connector Marketplace.

Insurance is a vital tool for accessing primary care and treatment for chronic diseases. Those who have not yet secured coverage for the year should visit the Health Connector website or contact the Mayor’s Health Line for urgent assistance before the deadline expires at midnight tonight.

Public Health Advisory: Childhood Vaccine Schedules

The Boston Public Health Commission, in alignment with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, has issued a reminder regarding childhood immunization. Despite recent federal changes to national guidelines, Massachusetts will continue to follow the evidence-based vaccine schedule recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Parents are encouraged to consult with their pediatricians to ensure children remain up to date on routine vaccinations, including those for influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Winter Storm Warning: Sunday Preparations

While today remains mostly sunny but cold, a major winter storm is expected to impact the region beginning Sunday, January 25. Forecasters are predicting 12 to 18 inches of snow, which may cause significant travel disruptions on Monday morning. The city advises residents to use today to stock up on essential supplies and ensure snow removal equipment is in working order.
