City Hall Notice: Presidents’ Day Service Schedule and Municipal Updates

City Hall Notice: Presidents’ Day Service Impacts and Municipal Roundup
The City of Boston has issued the following public service announcements and official notices regarding municipal operations, health hearings, and new institutional partnerships for Monday, February 16, 2026.
Presidents’ Day Holiday Observance
In observance of the Presidents’ Day federal holiday, all City of Boston municipal offices, including Boston Public Library branches and Boston Centers for Youth and Families (BCYF) community centers, are closed today, Monday, February 16. Regular operations will resume on Tuesday, February 17. The public should be aware of the following service adjustments:
- Trash and Recycling: Collection services are delayed by one day for the remainder of the week. Residents who normally have pickup on Monday should place their bins out on Tuesday. Residents are encouraged to use the "Trash Day" mobile application to verify their specific neighborhood schedule.
- Parking: Parking meters are free throughout the city today, and time limits are not being enforced. However, all other parking regulations, including fire hydrants, loading zones, and disabled parking spaces, remain in effect and will be strictly enforced.
- Street Cleaning: Daytime street cleaning has been suspended for the holiday. Overnight street cleaning will continue on its normal schedule unless otherwise posted.
New Partnership with Wentworth Institute of Technology
Mayor Michelle Wu has formally announced a new five-year Payment-in-Lieu-of-Taxes (PILOT) agreement with the Wentworth Institute of Technology. This agreement, the first written PILOT contract between the city and the institution in over two decades, commits more than $5.6 million in cash payments and community benefits over the next five years. A major component of the updated Institutional Master Plan includes the development of the Pike Residence Hall, which will provide 972 beds for students—an increase of 572 beds over previous versions of the project. This initiative is designed to alleviate pressure on the local housing market by housing the entire freshman class on campus and increasing public open space.
Public Health Notice: Pest Control and Leptospirosis Hearing
The City Council’s Committee on City Services has issued a formal notice for a public hearing (Docket #0281) regarding urban pest control and the recent discovery of leptospirosis in the city. Sponsored by Councilor Edward M. Flynn, the hearing is scheduled for Monday, March 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in the Iannella Chamber at City Hall. The committee is seeking public testimony regarding mitigation strategies and the public health implications of the discovery. Written comments may be submitted to the committee via the City Clerk’s office prior to the hearing date for those unable to attend the session in person or virtually.
Legislative Update: Public Safety and Education Funding
The Boston City Council has finalized the approval of supplemental appropriations totaling approximately $18.1 million for the Fire Department budget. This funding covers the collective bargaining agreement with IAFF Local 718. Additionally, the Council has approved over $1.3 million in appropriations for Boston Public Schools contracts. These funding measures follow extensive Committee of the Whole hearings and have been implemented to ensure the continued delivery of essential public safety and educational services through the remainder of the fiscal year.
