City Notice: Post-Storm Recovery and Scheduled Public Hearings

Post-Storm Recovery and Space Saver Enforcement
Following the major winter storm that delivered 23 inches of snow to the region, the City of Boston has transitioned into a full-scale cleanup phase. As of Thursday, January 29, 2026, the temporary snow emergency and parking ban have been lifted. However, residents are reminded that the 48-hour window for the use of space savers has officially expired. Public Works Department (PWD) crews are scheduled to begin the systematic removal of all remaining space savers today as part of regular trash collection routes. In neighborhoods where space savers are prohibited year-round, such as the South End and Bay Village, immediate removal is in effect.
Public Works teams are also conducting overnight snow removal operations between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. to clear large snowbanks that may obstruct sightlines at major intersections. Residents are encouraged to assist by clearing snow from fire hydrants and storm drains near their properties to prevent localized flooding and ensure emergency access.
Cold Weather Advisory in Effect
Mayor Michelle Wu has issued a Cold Weather Advisory active through Saturday, January 31, 2026. With wind chills forecasted to reach as low as -5 degrees Fahrenheit, the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) warns of increased risks for hypothermia and frostbite. Emergency shelters at 112 Southampton Street and the Woods Mullen Shelter remain open 24/7, with amnesty rules in place for those seeking respite from the sub-freezing temperatures. Residents are urged to check on elderly neighbors and ensure that habitable indoor spaces are maintained at a minimum of 68 degrees during daytime hours.
Official Commission Hearings
Several city boards and commissions are holding scheduled sessions today, Thursday, January 29. Members of the public are invited to participate in the following:
- Public Improvement Commission (PIC): Meeting at 10:00 a.m. via remote access and at City Hall, Room 801. The agenda includes a petition from Eversource Energy for the installation of utility poles on Lamartine Street and infrastructure improvements at 29 Hawkins Street.
- Office of Police Accountability and Transparency (OPAT): A virtual commission meeting is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The commission will take public testimony regarding ongoing oversight initiatives.
- Boston Finance Commission: A remote meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m. to discuss city budgetary matters and fiscal oversight.
MBTA Service Adjustments
Commuters are advised that the MBTA is continuing planned January service changes. Inspections and signal work are impacting portions of the Orange, Blue, and Red lines. Riders should check station signage for shuttle bus alternatives and allow for an additional 30 to 45 minutes of travel time due to the combination of ongoing maintenance and post-storm traffic conditions.
