  • Back Bay Architectural Commission: A virtual public hearing will begin at 11:00 a.m. to review proposed architectural changes and preservation efforts within the historic district.

Parks, Recreation, and School Vacation Activities

As February school vacation week concludes, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department continues to host free activities for students and families across the city:

  • Winter Festival at Franklin Park: In partnership with the Franklin Park Coalition, the city is hosting the 2026 Winter Festival. On Friday, attendees can meet the horses of the Boston Park Ranger Mounted Unit and learn about their role in patrolling the city's green spaces.
  • The Bubble at Carter Field: Located at 709 Columbus Avenue, this facility is hosting an open gym from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for pick-up sports. Later in the day, a baseball hitting and fielding clinic featuring UMass Boston players will run from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Snowshoeing Safari: Boston Park Rangers are leading nature exploration tours at Franklin Park. Residents are advised to dress for winter conditions; a limited supply of snowshoes is available for use.

Transportation and Public Safety Advisories

The Boston Transportation Department and local health officials have issued several advisories for Friday, February 20:

  • Road Condition Warning: Following a significant freeze-thaw cycle, officials are warning drivers of worsening pothole conditions, particularly along major corridors like American Legion Highway in Hyde Park. Residents are urged to report road defects to the city’s 311 system.
  • Special Event Preparation: Traffic restrictions are being posted along Cambridge Street and Congress Street in preparation for the Red Bull Snowboarding event at City Hall Plaza. While the main event is Saturday, residents should expect increased activity and limited parking starting today.
  • MBTA Weekend Service Alert: Commuters are reminded that Red Line service will be suspended between Broadway and Ashmont during the upcoming weekend (February 21-22) for signal upgrades. Shuttle buses will replace train service during this period.

Public Health Reminders

The Boston Public Health Commission continues to monitor seasonal illness trends. Residents are encouraged to stay up to date with flu and COVID-19 vaccinations. Additionally, the commission recently released the 2025-2028 Community Health Improvement Plan, which outlines strategies for addressing health inequities across the city's neighborhoods.
