Donation drop-off site opened at flooded UMass Boston East Residence Hall as displaced students seek essentials

Flooding forces building closure and student relocation
University of Massachusetts Boston has established an in-person donation drop-off area at the East Residence Hall after flooding displaced residents and left some students without access to basic belongings. The East Residence Hall was closed on Feb. 9, 2026, after a burst sprinkler pipe on the 10th floor caused water to travel into multiple floors and building systems.
University updates have said the closure is tied to repairs, water removal and remediation work, and restoring safety systems before any return is permitted. The affected building also includes the campus dining commons connected to East Residence, which was initially closed after the incident.
What happened and the scope of the damage
University communications have described the incident as a sprinkler pipe failure during extreme cold conditions. Initial assessments indicated that about 50 rooms across floors 2 through 10 were impacted in varying degrees, with water damage extending into walls, ceilings and stairwells. The flooding also affected fire suppression components and some electrical systems, requiring repairs and safety sign-offs before reentry.
Donation drop-offs and the types of needs reported
Donation drop-offs are being accepted on the first floor of the East Residence Hall. The effort is aimed at students who reported losses and disruptions ranging from soaked clothing and bedding to limited access to toiletries and other day-to-day items while they wait for supervised retrieval of belongings and longer-term housing decisions.
Alongside the physical drop-off option, the university has also set up an emergency aid fund to support impacted students financially. The school has communicated that emergency funding is available, and that it is working to secure housing solutions for displaced residents for the remainder of the semester.
Housing arrangements and ongoing uncertainty
Students have been temporarily reassigned to a mix of locations, including nearby hotels and other university housing options. University updates have included temporary placements at other UMass-managed sites, with transportation arrangements intended to keep students connected to classes and campus services.
As of mid-February, the university has not provided a firm timetable for reopening East Residence Hall to normal occupancy. University statements have emphasized that contractors and remediation teams are working daily and that reentry depends on meeting safety benchmarks following a full assessment.
- East Residence Hall closure date: Feb. 9, 2026
- Cause identified by the university: burst sprinkler pipe during extreme cold
- Initial impact estimate: roughly 50 rooms across floors 2–10
- Donation drop-off location: first floor of East Residence Hall
The university has said the priority is temporary housing, essential items and accommodations while repairs and safety assessments continue.
For students, the immediate challenge remains balancing coursework with relocation logistics, while awaiting building access and clarity on longer-term housing and recovery steps.
