Boston extends streaks behind goaltending and one turnover-driven goal

The Boston Fleet moved into a tie atop the Professional Women’s Hockey League standings Thursday night after a 1-0 win over the New York Sirens at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Goaltender Aerin Frankel recorded her fourth shutout of the season, stopping 23 shots, as Boston’s fifth consecutive victory also extended the club’s run of tight finishes.

The lone goal came late in the first period, when forward Ella Huber scored unassisted at 16:15 after Boston capitalized on a turnover in New York’s zone. With the result, Boston reached 35 points and drew level with Montréal for first place, while New York remained on the playoff bubble with 24 points.

Decisive moments: one mistake, two five-on-threes, and a disallowed empty-net goal

Huber’s goal held up through a game defined by special-teams pressure and goaltending at both ends. New York netminder Kayle Osborne turned aside 21 of 22 shots, while the Sirens’ penalty kill faced extended stress, including two separate five-on-three situations for Boston.

A pivotal sequence unfolded during a delayed penalty when Boston appeared to score into an empty net as Osborne headed to the bench for an extra attacker. Following an on-ice review conducted in consultation with the league’s central situation room, officials ruled play should have been stopped for a New York penalty, disallowing the goal. New York was also assessed an additional minor penalty for too many players, creating a lengthy two-player disadvantage the Sirens successfully defended.

Boston’s ability to avoid costly mistakes during scoreless power plays, while maintaining structure in a one-goal game, was a central feature of the closing stages.

Frankel closes it out as Boston’s trends continue

Frankel’s most demanding work arrived late, as New York pushed with the net empty for more than two minutes. The shutout was Frankel’s fourth this season and the sixth of her PWHL career, a league benchmark. It also marked the 10th time in 15 starts this season that she has allowed one goal or fewer.

The win extended Boston’s dominance in the head-to-head series: the Fleet have won 10 straight meetings with the Sirens, a streak the league identifies as the longest by one team against another. The 1-0 final also stood out historically as the first PWHL game in which only one player earned a point on the scoresheet, due to Huber’s unassisted goal.

What it means in the standings and what’s next

  • Boston: tied for first place with 35 points; five-game winning streak; nine straight one-goal decisions.
  • New York: tied for fifth place with 24 points; five-game losing streak; shut out a league-high four times this season.

Boston continues its road trip Tuesday with a first-time visit to Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum. New York returns home Sunday to host the Ottawa Charge.
