Disruptions ripple through New England’s busiest airport

Boston Logan International Airport has faced repeated bouts of large-scale flight disruptions this winter, with hundreds of flights delayed or canceled during major weather events and the recovery periods that follow. The heaviest recent impacts came during a late-February blizzard that sharply reduced airport capacity, stranded aircraft and crews out of position, and slowed the pace of return-to-normal operations across the Northeast.

On Monday, February 23, 2026, the storm prompted widespread cancellations at Logan as airlines cut schedules amid blizzard conditions. By Tuesday, February 24, 2026, cancellations and delays continued as carriers worked through backlogs and repositioned aircraft. Public flight tracking data showed hundreds of affected flights into and out of Logan during the peak of the disruption, with several hundred cancellations still posted by midday Tuesday as operations restarted.

Why flight boards deteriorate quickly during winter storms

Large disruption totals typically reflect both direct operational limits and systemwide knock-on effects. At Logan, winter storms can reduce runway arrival rates, slow ground handling, and extend turnaround times due to de-icing. Even after snowfall and wind ease, airports can face constrained taxi routes, staffing limits, and delayed inbound aircraft, all of which can keep schedules unstable well into the next day.

Carriers also face tight crew duty-time rules. When a storm forces long ground holds, diversions, or overnight aircraft misplacements, airlines may have planes available but not the legally cleared crews to operate them. That can produce cancellations even after the weather improves.

Massport has repeatedly urged passengers to confirm flight status before traveling to the airport during major disruptions and recovery periods.

Not only snow: high winds can also trigger major disruption

Logan has also seen hundreds of disruptions tied to high-wind events, including a late-December episode when strong gusts coincided with widespread delays and cancellations. High winds can affect departure and arrival spacing, complicate ground operations, and prompt airlines to preemptively cancel flights to manage aircraft and crew availability.

What travelers can do when flights are canceled or heavily delayed

  • Check airline and airport flight status tools frequently, especially during the hours before departure.

  • Rebooking options can change quickly; travelers often have more choices before arriving at the terminal.

  • Under U.S. Department of Transportation refund requirements, passengers are entitled to a refund when an airline cancels or significantly changes a flight and the passenger chooses not to accept the alternative offered.

With New England winter weather capable of disrupting operations in short windows, airport officials and airlines continue to emphasize monitoring real-time updates and allowing extra time for surface travel, check-in, and security during recovery days.
