Tapering Snow and Slow Recovery on Boston Roadways

Commuters heading out this Tuesday morning will face the lingering effects of the major winter storm that dumped over 18 inches of snow across the Greater Boston area. While the heaviest precipitation has moved out, the "big dig-out" continues, and road conditions remain slick and narrow in many neighborhoods. Authorities are urging residents to stay home if possible to allow plow crews to finish clearing primary and secondary routes.

Roadways and Major Arteries

MassDOT and city plow crews worked through the night, but many secondary roads remain partially unplowed or significantly narrowed by massive snowbanks. Massachusetts State Police have already responded to over 140 crashes and 230 disabled vehicles since the storm began. Drivers should expect the following conditions:

  • Commonwealth Avenue: While main lanes were cleared late Monday, Harry Agganis Way remains closed to all vehicular traffic (except the BU Shuttle) for ongoing snow melting operations.
  • North End & Downtown: Expect localized congestion and specific parking restrictions on Union Street and Hanover Street today. These restrictions are in place to support a scheduled Holocaust Memorial event.
  • Roslindale: The Canterbury Street Bridge remains closed to all vehicles following a recent structural inspection; detours via Hyde Park Avenue and Cummins Highway are still in effect and may be slower than usual due to snow accumulation.

MBTA Service Alerts

The MBTA is operating under challenging conditions as it recovers from the storm's impact. Riders should budget significant extra time for their commute:

  • Red Line: Expect delays of 30 minutes or more this morning. Trains are moving slowly as crews continue to clear snow and ice from outdoor tracks and switches.
  • Blue Line: Minor delays of approximately 10 minutes are reported due to weather-related signal issues.
  • Commuter Rail: Most lines are operational but expect boarding delays. Note that parking capacity at MBTA lots is currently reduced due to necessary snow piling.
  • Station Alerts: The North Station Elevator 731 (accessing Causeway Street) is unavailable today due to maintenance, and platform renovations at Jackson Square continue to affect boarding.

School and Municipal Updates

Boston Public Schools and Worcester Public Schools are closed today, Tuesday, January 27. Many surrounding towns have also implemented two-hour delays for municipal offices. Residents are reminded to check local parking ban status; while some bans have begun to lift, cars parked in designated emergency lots must be moved by the stated deadlines to avoid towing or being charged standard garage rates.
