Major Downtown Closures and Transit Shutdowns Impact Saturday Travel

Major Downtown Closures and Transit Shutdowns Impact Saturday Travel
Boston commuters and weekend travelers should prepare for significant delays this Saturday, February 21, 2026. A combination of high-profile winter events at City Hall Plaza and TD Garden, alongside extensive MBTA maintenance projects, is expected to create a challenging travel environment. Whether you are navigating the city by car or public transit, officials are recommending that you budget at least an additional 40 to 60 minutes for any trips into the downtown core.
Downtown Street Closures and Event Congestion
The City of Boston has implemented a major traffic advisory for the Government Center and North Station areas. The Red Bull Heavy Metal snowboarding finals are taking over City Hall Plaza, resulting in the closure of Congress Street between State Street and New Sudbury Street from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Additionally, Cambridge Street will be subject to a full closure between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Parking restrictions are currently in effect across both sides of Cambridge Street until 6:00 PM, and vehicles parked in tow zones will be removed to facilitate the event.
Travelers heading toward the TD Garden should also expect heavy congestion. Multiple performances of Disney On Ice are scheduled for 11:00 AM, 3:00 PM, and 7:00 PM today. This will result in high volumes of pedestrian traffic and vehicle gridlock near Causeway Street and the Zakim Bridge approach. Motorists are encouraged to use the Blue Line or the Green Line to access the area, as local parking will be extremely limited.
MBTA Red Line and Commuter Rail Disruptions
Public transit riders face a difficult Saturday due to critical infrastructure work across several lines. The most significant disruption is on the Red Line, where service is suspended all day between Broadway and Ashmont for signal modernization. While free, accessible shuttle buses are replacing train service, the MBTA warns that these shuttles will add approximately 40 minutes to a standard trip. Train service remains operational between JFK/UMass and Braintree.
Commuter Rail passengers are also affected by the following scheduled changes:
- Needham Line: Service is entirely suspended between Needham Heights and South Station for the West Roxbury Parkway Bridge project. There is no shuttle bus diversion for this line; passengers must utilize local bus routes or the Orange Line.
- North Station Hub: Signal system upgrades have triggered service suspensions on sections of the Fitchburg, Haverhill, Lowell, and Newburyport/Rockport lines. Diversion schedules and shuttle buses are in effect for these routes.
Driver and Commuter Recommendations
To bypass the downtown gridlock, drivers entering via I-93 should avoid the Government Center exits and consider using the Seaport or South End exits for local access. For those utilizing the Mass Pike (I-90), expect slowdowns near the Prudential Tunnel as traffic diverts away from the surface street closures. If you must travel through the city, public safety officials urge the use of the Orange or Blue Lines, which are currently operating on normal weekend schedules despite the heavy demand.
