Morning Commute Overview

Commuters in the Greater Boston area should prepare for a significant shift in travel patterns this morning, Wednesday, March 18, 2026. Following a blustery Tuesday marked by the tail end of Winter Storm Iona, weather conditions have stabilized with mostly sunny skies and temperatures near 37 degrees. However, the calm weather is contrasted by a major multi-day suspension on the MBTA Orange Line and several high-impact roadwork projects on major arteries including the Mass Pike and Bowker Overpass.

Orange Line Suspension Begins

The most significant disruption for transit riders starts today. The MBTA has suspended Orange Line service between Jackson Square and North Station to facilitate urgent infrastructure repairs. This closure is scheduled to last through Saturday, March 21. To mitigate the impact, the following alternatives are in place:

  • Free Shuttle Buses: Shuttles are operating between Jackson Square and Back Bay stations. Riders are encouraged to budget an additional 20 to 30 minutes for their commute.
  • Commuter Rail Alternative: The Commuter Rail is being offered as a fare-free alternative between Forest Hills, Ruggles, Back Bay, and South Station for the duration of the shutdown.
  • Station Closures: Ongoing renovations at Jackson Square have also closed the stairway connecting the lobby to the south end of the platform.

Major Roadworks and Highway Delays

Drivers on major highways will face several bottleneck points due to ongoing construction projects. On the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) Westbound, the right lane remains closed between the Prudential Tunnel and Fenway Park, causing significant rubbernecking and delays during the morning peak. Additionally, in the Fenway area, the Bowker Overpass is reduced to a single lane at Boylston Street as part of a long-term bridge superstructure replacement project.

In Roslindale, the Canterbury Street Bridge remains closed to all vehicular traffic until further notice following a failed safety inspection. Drivers are being detoured via Hyde Park Avenue and Cummins Highway. Commuters coming from the north should also note that the I-95 Southbound off-ramp to Route 2A Westbound in Lexington is closed for construction, requiring alternate routes through local surface streets.

MBTA and Commuter Rail Alerts

Beyond the Orange Line, several other transit alerts are active today:

  • Commuter Rail: Service on the Haverhill Line is suspended between North Station and Oak Grove. Riders should use the Orange Line as an alternative. Similarly, the Lowell Line is suspended between North Station and Anderson/Woburn, with free shuttle buses replacing trains.
  • Red Line: Signal modernization continues at Columbia Junction. Commuters using Broadway Station should be aware that Elevators 867 and 868 are out of service for maintenance through late May; a dedicated shuttle is running between Broadway and Andrew for those requiring elevator access.

Commuters are advised to check real-time tracking apps before departure, as residual delays from yesterday's high winds may still affect some bus routes and commuter rail timings this morning.
