Major Red Line Shuttles and Commuter Rail Diversions Signal Heavy Sunday Delays

Major Transit Disruptions This Sunday
Boston commuters and weekend travelers should prepare for significant travel time increases today, Sunday, February 22, 2026. The MBTA is undertaking critical infrastructure work across multiple lines, specifically targeting signal upgrades and bridge maintenance. If you are heading into the city for events or utilizing the transit system for your daily commute, please allow for at least 40 to 60 minutes of additional travel time.
Red Line Shuttles in Effect
The most substantial impact today is on the Red Line. Shuttle buses have replaced regular train service between Broadway and Ashmont. This suspension affects both the Ashmont and Braintree branches at the northern end of their respective routes. While regular train service continues to operate between JFK/UMass and Braintree, riders traveling from downtown must transition to shuttle buses at Broadway to reach points south. MBTA officials recommend using the Fall River/New Bedford, Kingston, or Greenbush Commuter Rail lines for fare-free service between Braintree, Quincy Center, JFK/UMass, and South Station to bypass the shuttle congestion.
North Station Commuter Rail Alerts
Infrastructure work on the North Station Terminal Area Signal System has triggered widespread weekend diversions. The following changes are active today:
- Lowell Line: Service is suspended between North Station and Anderson/Woburn. Accessible shuttle buses are running between these stations.
- Fitchburg Line: Trains are not running between North Station and Porter Square. Riders are encouraged to use the Red Line for connections at Porter.
- Haverhill Line: Service is suspended between North Station and Oak Grove. Commuters should utilize the Orange Line to complete their trips.
- Newburyport/Rockport Line: Service is suspended between North Station and Swampscott. Local shuttle buses are providing alternate transportation.
TD Garden Events and Roadway Impacts
In addition to transit delays, traffic in the West End and near North Station is expected to be heavy due to multiple performances of Disney On Ice at TD Garden. Localized parking restrictions are in effect on several streets in Dorchester and South Boston to support the ongoing Red Line signal work, including sections of Dorchester Avenue and Boston Street. Motorists are also reminded that the Canterbury Street Bridge in Roslindale remains closed indefinitely, with detours directed toward Hyde Park Avenue and Cummins Highway. Drive with caution and check for real-time updates before departing.
