Boston Traffic and Commute Update: Saturday, March 14, 2026

Good morning, Boston. As we head into the weekend before St. Patrick’s Day, commuters and residents should prepare for a significant increase in activity and several major transit disruptions. While today is not the day of the South Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade, the logistical preparations and weekend-long infrastructure projects will impact your travel starting this morning.

Major MBTA Service Suspensions

The most significant impact on today's commute comes from the MBTA’s North Station Terminal Area Signal System Improvement Project. Four major Commuter Rail lines are experiencing total service suspensions between North Station and various suburban hubs to allow for the installation of new signal microprocessors. If you usually rely on these lines, plan for significant delays as shuttle buses replace rail service:

  • Fitchburg Line: Service is suspended between North Station and Porter Square. Riders are advised to use the Red Line for connections at Porter.
  • Haverhill Line: Trains are replaced by shuttle buses between North Station and Oak Grove, where riders can transfer to the Orange Line.
  • Lowell Line: Local shuttle buses are operating between North Station and Anderson/Woburn.
  • Newburyport/Rockport Line: Both local and express shuttle buses are running between North Station and Swampscott. Express shuttles can add up to 40 minutes to your trip, while local shuttles may add over an hour.

Additionally, Red Line riders on the Ashmont Branch should be aware that signal modernization work near JFK/UMass will cause delays and longer travel times starting at 8:00 p.m. tonight. At South Station, the elevator connecting the lobby to Dewey Square is currently out of service for maintenance; please use the lobby ramp toward the Commuter Rail concourse as an alternative.

South Boston Road and Parking Alerts

With the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, March 15, parking restrictions in South Boston begin in earnest today. The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has issued a strict advisory for the Castle Island parking lot. All vehicles without a South Boston resident parking sticker must exit the lot by 6:00 p.m. today. Starting at 7:00 p.m. tonight, the lot will be reserved exclusively for resident permit holders through Monday morning.

Residents looking for off-street parking can utilize the Marine Park Garage at 12 Drydock Avenue at a reduced rate starting at 6:00 p.m. today. While most parade-route road closures do not take effect until Sunday morning, expect increased pedestrian traffic and temporary delays on West Broadway and Dorchester Street throughout the afternoon as crews set up barriers.

Ongoing Infrastructure and Maintenance

In Roslindale, the Canterbury Street Bridge remains closed to all vehicular traffic following a recent safety inspection. Drivers are being diverted via Hyde Park Avenue and Cummins Highway. Meanwhile, the City of Boston has confirmed that daytime street cleaning in the North End, South End, and Beacon Hill has been delayed until Monday, March 16. However, overnight cleaning schedules remain in effect, and parking meters are active across the city today.
