Mayor Wu to Headline Annual MLK Celebration at Boston University

Mayor Michelle Wu is scheduled to lead the City of Boston’s official 2026 observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day today, Monday, January 19. The centerpiece of the city’s political and civic schedule is the annual event titled “A Day of Celebration in Honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” held in partnership with Boston University. The program is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. at Metcalf Hall, located within the George Sherman Union on Commonwealth Avenue.

This year’s celebration centers on the theme “Justice Indivisible: Fighting Racism, Greed, and War,” a motif inspired by Dr. King’s landmark 1967 speech, “The Three Evils of Society.” Mayor Wu, alongside Boston University President Melissa Gilliam, will deliver remarks addressing how these historical challenges continue to shape local governance and community equity in 2026. The event will feature a keynote address by Dr. Eve L. Ewing, a renowned scholar and associate professor from the University of Chicago. For residents unable to attend in person, the proceedings will be broadcast live on Boston City TV and streamed via the official city website.

Memorial Breakfast and Official City Service Projects

Earlier today, the Mayor and various city leaders participated in the 56th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast at The Westin Copley Place. This longstanding tradition serves as one of the city's premier political networking and community reflection events, uniting local, state, and federal representatives to discuss the progress of civil rights within the Commonwealth. The breakfast traditionally sets the tone for the day’s legislative priorities regarding social justice and economic inclusion.

In addition to formal addresses, the city government is sponsoring several high-profile service activities. City Year Greater Boston is hosting a “Day of Service” at the Condon K-8 School in South Boston. This event involves volunteers and city officials working together on impactful projects, such as assembling resource kits for local students. These activities reflect the city's commitment to transforming the holiday into a “day on” rather than a day off, emphasizing civic engagement over administrative sessions.

Status of City Council and Municipal Offices

As today is a federal and state holiday, the Boston City Council is not in session. No legislative votes or formal committee hearings are scheduled for today, and the Council’s weekly meeting has been adjusted to accommodate the holiday observance. All non-emergency municipal offices, including those at Boston City Hall, are closed to the public today. Regular government operations and public hearings are expected to resume tomorrow, Tuesday, January 20, as the city transitions back to its standard legislative calendar.
