MBTA adds Red Line trains, free shuttles and detours for South Boston parade crowds Sunday

Service changes aimed at managing heavy demand for South Boston’s signature March event
The MBTA is increasing service and adjusting operations for the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day/Evacuation Day Parade, scheduled for Sunday, March 15, 2026, with a planned step-off at 11:30 a.m. The transit plan is designed to move large crowds into and out of South Boston while reducing platform congestion and accommodating street closures that affect bus routes.
This year’s parade is expected to draw significant attendance and coincides with the 250th anniversary of Evacuation Day, the March 17, 1776 withdrawal of British forces from Boston that the holiday commemorates. Organizers have also announced a reversed parade route for 2026, shifting the starting point to Andrew Square, a change that alters where riders may concentrate on the Red Line and on surrounding streets.
Red Line schedule boost and possible station bypasses
On parade day, the MBTA plans to operate the Red Line on a rush-hour schedule for an extended midday window, increasing train frequency beyond a typical Sunday schedule. The agency has also indicated that trains may bypass Broadway Station at times if conditions require it, a crowd-management measure used in prior years to prevent unsafe crowding on platforms and stairways.
The MBTA’s operating plan centers on more frequent Red Line service, targeted station management, and added personnel presence near key stops serving the parade area.
Free shuttle buses between South Station and City Point
To provide an alternative to the Red Line for the busiest part of the day, the MBTA plans to run free shuttle buses between South Station and the City Point area in South Boston. The shuttle service is scheduled to operate from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., creating a direct option for riders coming from intercity rail, the Commuter Rail, and other subway lines feeding into South Station.
Bus detours and on-the-ground safety operations
Street closures along and near the parade route typically require detours and temporary stop changes for multiple MBTA bus routes serving South Boston. Riders should expect changes to normal boarding locations and longer travel times as buses are routed around closed sections of Broadway and other streets near the route.
- Red Line: additional trains on a rush-hour schedule during the peak parade window
- Broadway Station: may be bypassed intermittently to manage overcrowding
- Shuttles: free service between South Station and City Point from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Buses: detours and stop changes expected due to parade-related closures
The MBTA has also indicated it will deploy additional Transit Police and personnel at key stations to support crowd flow, provide directions, and respond to safety issues. Officials are urging riders to plan ahead, expect delays, and be prepared for operational adjustments that may be implemented in real time as conditions change.
