A young dog’s final days in care

A roughly 2-year-old pit bull terrier mix found in Lexington, Massachusetts, in a near-starvation condition was euthanized in mid-January after several days of intensive veterinary treatment at the Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston. The dog, later named Dolly by caregivers, was brought in on Saturday, January 10, after a person reported finding her outside in Lexington.

Veterinary teams provided round-the-clock care and initially pursued a closely managed plan to stabilize her condition. Despite those efforts, the dog suffered a medical emergency on Thursday night, January 15, that left her dependent on oxygen. Medical staff determined her condition had worsened and concluded that humane euthanasia was necessary on Friday, January 16.

Medical findings and complications

Clinicians documented extreme emaciation, describing Dolly as too weak to stand when she arrived. Examinations also identified wounds on her feet and tail. During her intake and intensive-care monitoring, veterinarians identified a gastrointestinal bleed that required a blood transfusion. The medical team also worked to prevent complications associated with refeeding in severely malnourished animals, which can be life-threatening if nutrition is reintroduced too rapidly.

By the time of the euthanasia decision, staff cited both the acute medical setback and broader concerns about her long-term prognosis.

Investigation and search for ownership information

Animal protection investigators are seeking information about how Dolly came to be in such condition and are asking the public to help identify her owner. Investigators have said that, beyond the report that she was found in Lexington, details about her prior circumstances remain unclear and that she may have lived elsewhere in the Boston area.

How Massachusetts law frames animal neglect cases

Massachusetts law prohibits depriving an animal of necessary sustenance and failing to provide proper food, drink, shelter, or protection from the weather. The state’s primary animal cruelty statute allows penalties that can include imprisonment and fines, depending on the conduct and whether the offense is a first or subsequent violation.

Dolly was euthanized on January 16, 2026, following a medical emergency and concerns about her long-term outlook after severe emaciation.
