New MassDOT surveillance video details I-93 pickup truck crash into Zakim Bridge barrier in Boston

Video captures seconds leading to crash on the bridge’s upper deck

A newly released surveillance video shows a pickup truck veering into a barrier on Interstate 93 northbound on the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge, leaving the vehicle lodged in a precarious position above traffic below. The crash occurred on Feb. 5, 2026, on the bridge’s upper deck near the Cantilever ramp.

The video depicts a vehicle becoming disabled in a travel lane on I-93. As traffic approaches, the pickup truck swerves to avoid the stopped vehicle and strikes the roadside barrier area, continuing into protective fencing at the edge of the bridge structure.

Truck stopped short of going over the edge; no injuries reported

Authorities said the pickup did not fall from the bridge. The vehicle came to rest on a snowbank and against fencing at the bridge edge, with part of the truck extending over the side above the roadway below. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.

State police received initial reports around 5:30 a.m. on Feb. 5. Traffic impacts were reported during the morning commute as crews worked to stabilize and remove the vehicle. A heavy-duty rotator tow truck was requested to support recovery operations and reduce the risk of the truck shifting during removal.

Response and repairs: lane impacts and damaged fencing

Transportation officials reported at least one lane closure on I-93 northbound during the response, with the affected lane reopening later that morning after the vehicle was removed. Officials also said the protective fence damaged in the crash was slated for repair in the days following the incident.

  • Outcome: the truck was prevented from going over the edge and was later recovered; no injuries were reported.
