Official City Notice: Blizzard Recovery and Essential Service Updates

Public Alert: Snow Emergency and Recovery Efforts
Mayor Michelle Wu has issued a citywide update following the record-breaking 'Blizzard of 2026,' which deposited over 15 inches of snow across the region in the last 24 hours. The City of Boston remains under a declared snow emergency and parking ban until at least 6:00 p.m. today, Tuesday, February 24, 2026. Residents are reminded that vehicles parked on major arteries and posted snow emergency routes will be towed to allow for ongoing plowing and widening of roadways. Space savers may be used in all neighborhoods except the South End and Bay Village for up to 48 hours after the emergency is lifted.
Education: Boston Public Schools Closure
All Boston Public Schools (BPS) and central offices will remain closed today, Tuesday, February 24, 2026. This additional closure is intended to ensure that city crews can safely clear sidewalks and bus stops for the district's 700-bus fleet. All extracurricular activities, sports, and after-school programs are also canceled for the day. Families are encouraged to check the official BPS website for updates regarding Wednesday’s operations.
Public Works: Trash and Recycling Schedule
Due to the winter storm, the Public Works Department has announced a one-day delay for all curbside trash and recycling collections for the remainder of the week. Collections originally scheduled for Monday will occur today, Tuesday; Tuesday’s routes will be collected on Wednesday, continuing through Saturday. Food waste collection is also delayed by one day. Residents are requested to keep bins clear of snowbanks to facilitate safe pickup.
Municipal Openings and Library Services
While City Hall and major municipal offices are operating on regular hours, several community-facing services will have a delayed start. Boston Public Library (BPL) branches, senior centers, and Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) are scheduled to reopen to the public at 12:00 p.m. today. Residents are advised to call ahead before visiting local branches to confirm local snow clearing is complete.
