Public Health Advisory: Life Expectancy Report and Equity Agenda

On February 27, 2026, Mayor Michelle Wu and the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) announced the release of the first-ever report examining life expectancy among Black residents in Boston. This initiative is part of the city’s broader "Live Long and Well Agenda," which aims to address systemic health disparities. The report reveals a significant life expectancy gap and highlights the urgent need for targeted intervention. In response, the city is launching a $2 million investment, including a $1 million grant program specifically focused on improving health outcomes for Black men and a partnership with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to tackle premature mortality drivers.

Major Transit Diversions and MBTA Service Changes

Beginning Saturday, February 28, 2026, significant service changes will take effect across the MBTA network to accommodate critical infrastructure and signal upgrades. Commuters are advised to plan for additional travel time:

  • Orange Line: Service is suspended between Back Bay and Forest Hills through March 8. Accessible shuttle buses will serve all affected stations. To assist travelers, the Franklin/Foxboro, Needham, and Providence/Stoughton Commuter Rail lines will be fare-free for trips between Forest Hills, Ruggles, Back Bay, and South Station.
  • Commuter Rail Weekend Shuttles: Service on sections of the Fitchburg, Haverhill, Lowell, and Newburyport/Rockport lines is suspended for the weekend of February 28 – March 1 to allow for signal system upgrades at North Station.
  • Red Line Braintree Branch: Starting at 8:00 p.m. on February 28, riders should expect increased travel times and delays due to evening signal work near JFK/UMass.

Public Service Notice: Post-Storm Recovery and Waste Collection

Following the major winter storm earlier this week, the City of Boston continues to implement recovery protocols to ensure public safety and effective snow removal:

  • Trash and Recycling: Due to the recent blizzard, trash and recycling collection remains delayed by one day in all neighborhoods for the remainder of the week. Residents should ensure bins are visible and accessible to collection crews.
  • Street Cleaning: Overnight street cleaning operations remain canceled until further notice to facilitate ongoing snow clearing.
  • Parking Kiosks: Parking meters are currently operating on their normal schedules. The city tow lot remains closed to the public on weekends, though automated kiosks for vehicle releases are available 24/7.

Community Announcements and Weekend Events

The City of Boston is hosting the Ramadan Night Market at City Hall Plaza on Saturday, February 28, starting at 9:00 p.m. Additionally, the "WinterActive" program remains active throughout the city, providing free outdoor activities. Residents in Chinatown are reminded that parking restrictions will go into effect early Sunday morning, March 1, for the annual Chinese New Year Lion Dance celebration.
