Boston commuters and Valentine's Day travelers should prepare for significant disruptions this Saturday, February 14, 2026. Major signal upgrade work on the MBTA Orange Line and ongoing lane closures on the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) are expected to impact travel times across the metro area throughout the day.

MBTA Service Disruptions: Orange Line Shutdown

The most substantial impact to public transit today is the suspension of Orange Line service between Jackson Square and Forest Hills. This closure, which began this morning and continues through Monday, February 16, is necessary for critical signal upgrades. The MBTA has provided the following alternatives for riders:

• Shuttle Buses: Free, accessible shuttle buses are replacing train service and making all stops between Jackson Square and Forest Hills. Commuters should budget at least 20 minutes of additional travel time when using these shuttles.
• Fare-Free Commuter Rail: To alleviate congestion, the MBTA is offering fare-free service on the Franklin/Foxboro, Needham, and Providence/Stoughton Lines between Forest Hills, Ruggles, Back Bay, and South Station. This is the recommended alternative for those traveling directly into the city center.

Additionally, riders on the Red Line Braintree Branch should monitor for residual delays following equipment issues reported earlier this morning. Bus Route 77 is also experiencing delays of up to 20 minutes due to heavy localized traffic.

Major Roadwork and Bridge Closures

Drivers using the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) will encounter a right-lane closure on the eastbound side between Fenway Park and the Prudential Tunnel. This long-term project continues to cause bottlenecking, especially during midday hours. In the western suburbs, the I-90/I-95 interchange in Newton and Weston remains reduced to a single lane on several ramps as part of a multi-year bridge rehabilitation project.

In Roslindale, the Canterbury Street Bridge remains closed to all vehicular traffic until further notice following a recent safety inspection. A primary detour is in place utilizing Hyde Park Avenue, Cummins Highway, and Seymour Street. Drivers in this area are urged to reduce speed and follow posted signage.

Downtown Events and Parking Restrictions

While the Red Bull Snowboarding Event at City Hall Plaza is scheduled for next weekend, preparation work begins today. Cambridge Street is subject to parking restrictions on both sides from Court Street to New Sudbury Street. With a major concert at TD Garden tonight and various Valentine's Day festivities in the Seaport and Back Bay, heavy congestion is expected in the downtown core starting at 5:00 PM. Public transit remains the most reliable option for reaching evening events.
