Service disruption centered on Bradford area in Haverhill

MBTA Commuter Rail service on the Haverhill Line was disrupted early Tuesday after police activity along the right of way near Bradford led to cancellations and delays, affecting peak-period riders traveling to and from Boston.

The disruption was tied to an incident in which a pedestrian was struck by a commuter rail train in the Bradford section of Haverhill. Emergency responders transported the person to a local hospital. Officials had not released an update on the individual’s condition as the morning commute unfolded.

Which trains were affected and what riders were told

At least one train was canceled as a result of the police activity. The MBTA reported that Haverhill Line Train 1216, the 7:33 a.m. departure from Reading, was canceled due to police activity on the right of way. Riders were advised to consider alternate service, including Haverhill Line Train 218, which originated in Lawrence.

In addition to the cancellation, the MBTA warned of broader impacts in both directions. Trains were expected to experience delays, and service patterns were adjusted while investigators worked in the track area near Bradford. During the response, some trips terminated and originated at Lawrence, temporarily limiting service to and from Haverhill stops.

  • Location: Right of way near Bradford, in the Haverhill area
  • Line affected: Haverhill Line
  • Immediate impacts: At least one cancellation and significant delays in both directions
  • Operational change: Trains terminating/originating at Lawrence during the investigation

Response at the scene

Emergency crews were dispatched to the area between the Bradford station and Cross Road shortly after 5:30 a.m. A train was stopped on the tracks as police and other responders worked nearby. Riders on affected trains were directed toward alternative arrangements as service was reconfigured around the incident area.

Haverhill Line passengers were advised to anticipate delays in both directions due to police activity near Bradford, with service adjustments in place during the investigation.

What comes next for riders

Transit disruptions tied to active investigations often evolve quickly, with service levels changing as soon as track access is restored and operating plans are reset. Riders on the Haverhill Line were urged to check current train status before traveling and to plan for additional time during the morning commute while the investigation continued.
