Red Line Service Restored; Weather Alerts Issued for Boston Shore Roads

Commuter Alert: Weekend Service Adjustments and Weather Warnings
Good morning, Boston. This is your traffic and commute update for Sunday, February 1, 2026. While some major transit repairs have been postponed due to weather, local road closures and significant coastal warnings remain in effect. Commuters and residents should prepare for frigid temperatures and potential shore road flooding throughout the day.
MBTA Subway and Silver Line Updates
In a major update for T riders, the Red Line service suspension previously scheduled for this weekend between Broadway and North Quincy/Ashmont has been cancelled. Regular weekend service is operating as the MBTA works to manage the lingering impacts of the recent winter storm. However, riders on the Silver Line (SL2) should note that the Northern Ave @ Tide St stop is closed today until 6:00 PM due to ongoing construction. Commuters are advised to use the alternate stop at 23 Drydock Ave.
Commuter Rail Disruptions
The Needham Line is experiencing a full service suspension today between Needham Heights and South Station. This closure is necessary for MassDOT to continue work on the West Roxbury Parkway Bridge Replacement project. Shuttle buses are replacing trains, and the MBTA has added extra service to Bus Route 59 to help accommodate passengers traveling between Newton Highlands and Needham Junction.
Road Closures and Traffic Advisories
- Roslindale: The Canterbury Street Bridge remains closed to all vehicular traffic until further notice. Drivers should follow posted detours utilizing Hyde Park Avenue and Cummins Highway. Pedestrian access across the bridge is being maintained.
- Coastal Flooding: A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for Suffolk County. High tide cycles today may lead to minor flooding on shore roads. Motorists are urged to avoid driving through standing water, particularly in low-lying coastal areas.
- Cold Weather: With a Cold Weather Advisory in effect and wind chills potentially reaching 15 degrees below zero, those using public transit are encouraged to dress in layers and limit time spent outdoors at exposed stations.
Sunday Parking and Maintenance
For those driving into the city, parking meters are free today, and there is no time limit for Sunday parking. Additionally, the City of Boston has announced that overnight street cleaning is cancelled due to the recent weather conditions, so residents do not need to move their vehicles for scheduled sweeping shifts.
