‘Some Like It Hot’ brings Prohibition-era jazz and farce to Boston for a two-week run

A Broadway-born musical comedy arrives at the Citizens Opera House
Boston is set to host the national tour of Some Like It Hot, the stage musical adapted from the 1959 film comedy. The production is scheduled to play at the Citizens Opera House from Jan. 27 through Feb. 8, 2026, placing the show among the winter highlights on the city’s touring-theater calendar.
The musical’s Boston engagement comes after the production’s Broadway run at the Shubert Theatre in New York, where it began previews on Nov. 1, 2022, opened Dec. 11, 2022, and played its final performance on Dec. 30, 2023.
What the musical is, and how it differs from the film’s premise
Some Like It Hot is set in the Prohibition era and follows two musicians who go on the run after witnessing a mob-related killing, then disguise themselves as women to join an all-female band as they flee Chicago. The story builds around mistaken identities, romantic complications, and the practical risks of maintaining the disguise while evading criminals and law enforcement.
The stage adaptation uses the film’s core setup while reworking characters and plot for a full-length musical structure, including expanded roles for the band and a large ensemble framework shaped around dance-driven set pieces.
Creative team and recognition
The Broadway production was directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, with a book by Matthew López and Amber Ruffin, and a score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The show’s Broadway run received 13 Tony Award nominations and won four awards at the 2023 ceremony, including Best Leading Actor in a Musical (for J. Harrison Ghee) and Best Choreography.
The production’s awards profile has positioned it as one of the most decorated new musical comedies of the 2022–23 Broadway season.
Boston dates and what audiences can expect
Tour schedules list performances throughout the engagement window, including weekday evening shows and weekend matinees. The venue, capacity, and multi-performance format indicate an extended local run typical of large-scale touring musicals, with the production designed to fill a major proscenium house.
Run: Jan. 27 to Feb. 8, 2026
Venue: Citizens Opera House, Boston
Format: Multiple performances across two weeks
For Boston theatergoers, the stop offers a chance to see a recent Broadway title closely associated with big-band styling, period design, and choreography-forward staging—hallmarks that helped define its New York run before transitioning to the touring circuit.
