South Boston’s 2026 St. Patrick’s Day Parade Will Run in Reverse, Adding Family-Friendly Zone

A familiar tradition with a notable logistical shift
South Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day/Evacuation Day Parade is scheduled for Sunday, March 15, 2026, with a start time of 11:30 a.m., continuing an earlier kickoff introduced last year. Organizers have announced a route change that keeps the parade within its customary South Boston footprint but reverses the direction of travel, reshaping crowd flows and transit impacts for spectators and residents.
The parade will begin in Andrew Square and conclude at A Street and West Broadway. The revised routing also shifts one segment of the march to East 6th Street rather than East 5th Street, a change expected to redistribute viewing concentrations across several side streets and intersections.
Route details and ceremonial stop
The 2026 route begins at Andrew Square and proceeds along Dorchester Street, then bears onto Telegraph Street and continues toward Thomas Park and G Street. It then travels down East 6th Street to K Street, turns left, and later turns right at East 4th Street. The procession continues to P Street, then turns onto East Broadway.
A scheduled pause at Medal of Honor Park is planned for a wreath-laying at the Vietnam memorial before the parade continues along East Broadway to West Broadway and ends at A Street and West Broadway. As in prior years, the route passes multiple veterans’ organizations and memorial sites that reflect the parade’s dual identity as a civic celebration and a commemorative event tied to Evacuation Day.
- Date and time: Sunday, March 15, 2026, 11:30 a.m. start
- Start: Andrew Square
- Finish: A Street and West Broadway
- Planned ceremonial stop: Medal of Honor Park
Why the route is reversing
The route reversal has been presented as a historical reference point connected to the 250th anniversary year of events associated with the Revolutionary era in Boston, including the city’s March 1776 evacuation by British forces. The parade’s Evacuation Day component has long linked South Boston’s modern festivities with local Revolutionary history, and the 2026 configuration is designed to reflect that commemorative context.
Family-friendly zone and public-safety planning
Organizers are adding a designated family-friendly area near Medal of Honor Park off East Broadway, intended to offer a more contained viewing environment for families and children. The family zone will include a “Touch a Truck” activity, a format commonly used at community events to provide structured engagement for younger attendees.
The family-focused area is being positioned as an option for spectators seeking separation from the more crowded and higher-energy parts of the route.
Transportation and street impacts
Public transportation will play a central role in access to the parade. Plans call for complimentary shuttle service between South Station and South Boston during the event window. On the MBTA, Red Line operations are expected to run on a rush-hour schedule from late morning through the afternoon, with the possibility that Broadway Station could be bypassed at times due to crowding conditions.
Parking restrictions and road closures are expected across major corridor streets and feeder roads along the parade route, with enforcement focused on maintaining emergency access and keeping the route clear for marching units.
