A late-in-life breakthrough shaped a major chapter of the band’s touring era

Tommy DeCarlo, the vocalist who became Boston’s lead singer after first coming to the band’s attention as a fan posting online covers, has died. He was 60.

DeCarlo died on Monday, March 9, 2026, after a battle with brain cancer, according to statements posted by his children on his social media pages. The family said he had been struggling for months and asked for privacy as they grieved.

From tribute recording to the Boston stage

DeCarlo’s path to one of classic rock’s most recognizable catalogs began outside the music business. In 2007, following the death of original Boston singer Brad Delp, DeCarlo—then working at a Home Depot in North Carolina—recorded a tribute song and posted it online alongside cover versions of Boston material. He sent the link to the band, seeking a chance to participate in a tribute event.

After an initial rejection, Boston founder, guitarist and principal songwriter Tom Scholz later invited DeCarlo to sing at a Delp tribute concert after hearing his vocals and noting their resemblance to Delp’s tone. DeCarlo ultimately joined Boston and remained a principal touring vocalist from 2007 until his death, a stretch approaching two decades.

Work with the band and a role in later recordings

Boston, formed in 1975, built its legacy on arena-rock staples including “More Than a Feeling,” “Peace of Mind,” and “Don’t Look Back.” With DeCarlo on vocals, the band continued to perform the catalog live through the years following Delp’s death.

DeCarlo also contributed to Boston’s sixth studio album, Life, Love & Hope, released in 2013. The album included performances by multiple vocalists and incorporated posthumous Delp vocals on several tracks, while also featuring DeCarlo’s lead vocals on at least one song.

Recent health disclosures and the end of touring

In late 2025, DeCarlo publicly announced he would step away from performing due to unexpected health issues. Event updates tied to appearances he had been scheduled to make also cited serious health concerns in the months leading up to his death.

  • Died: March 9, 2026; age 60

  • Known for: Lead touring vocalist for Boston (2007–2026)

  • Notable recording with the band: Life, Love & Hope (2013)

DeCarlo’s entry into Boston was built on fan recordings posted online and a tribute to Brad Delp—an unusual route into a long-running touring role for a major rock act.
