Commute Overview: Rain and Snow Create Slick Roads

Boston commuters are facing a challenging Wednesday morning as a mix of rain and snow moves through the region. With temperatures hovering around 31°F and a 40% chance of snow, road surfaces across the metro area are reported as slick and slushy. MassDOT has issued a general advisory for drivers to reduce speeds and maintain a safe following distance, particularly on elevated highway sections where icing is more likely. While major arteries like I-93 remain open, visibility is reduced, and standard travel times are currently exceeding morning averages by approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Major Roadworks: I-90 Eastbound Lane Closure

Drivers using the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) should prepare for localized bottlenecks heading into the city. A significant road construction project has resulted in a right-lane closure on I-90 Eastbound between the Fenway Park area and the Prudential Tunnel. This closure has been in effect since the early morning hours and is expected to persist throughout the peak commute. Congestion is currently stretching back toward Allston/Brighton, so motorists may want to consider Storrow Drive or Commonwealth Avenue as alternates, though these surface roads are also experiencing heavy volume due to the weather.

Public Transport: Orange Line Shutdown and Red Line Delays

The MBTA is managing a major service disruption on the Orange Line this week. Shuttle buses are currently replacing service between Back Bay and Forest Hills to allow for critical signal upgrades. This service change will remain in effect through March 8. Riders are advised to budget an additional 30 minutes of travel time when using the shuttle bus service. To mitigate the impact, the MBTA is offering fare-free Commuter Rail service between Forest Hills, Ruggles, Back Bay, and South Station on the Franklin/Foxboro, Needham, and Providence/Stoughton Lines.

Additionally, Red Line riders on the Braintree Branch should plan for nightly disruptions. Beginning at 8:00 PM, travel times will increase by 10 to 15 minutes due to signal modernization work near the JFK/UMass junction. This work is part of a multi-phase project expected to continue through April.

Station Access and Elevator Alerts

Commuters should also be aware of several ongoing station maintenance projects that may affect accessibility:

  • Harvard Station: The escalator from the Mezzanine to Harvard Square is out of service for maintenance until March 13.
  • Central Station: The escalator from the Alewife-bound platform to the street level is unavailable through March 27.
  • Porter Station: A scheduled elevator closure is set for tomorrow, March 5, but prep work may affect platform flow today.

Given the combination of wintry weather and rail diversions, commuters are strongly encouraged to check real-time MBTA alerts and allow for significant extra travel time today.
