Winter Storm Recovery and Key MBTA Disruptions: Wednesday Boston Commute Update

Winter Storm Aftermath and Transit Maintenance Impacting Wednesday Commute
Boston commuters are navigating a complex landscape this Wednesday morning, January 28, 2026, as the region continues to recover from the significant winter storm that impacted Central and Eastern Massachusetts earlier this week. While the snow emergency and citywide parking bans have been lifted, the cleanup phase is still in full swing, leading to residual delays and reduced capacity at many transit facilities.
MBTA Service Alerts and Bus Detours
Riders on the MBTA system should be aware of several scheduled and unscheduled disruptions today. Most notably, the Jackson Square Station is experiencing significant accessibility changes. Starting today, Wednesday, and continuing through Friday, January 30, Elevator 846 (serving the platform to the paid lobby) is out of service for essential maintenance. To assist affected passengers, the MBTA has deployed a shuttle bus to transport customers between Jackson Square and Stony Brook. Commuters may also utilize Bus Route 22 as an alternative for travel between Jackson Square and Roxbury Crossing.
For bus commuters in the Cambridge and Boston areas, Routes 1 and 70 remain on detour through the end of today. Due to ongoing construction, these routes are not servicing the stops at Massachusetts Avenue at Sydney Street or Franklin Street at Sidney Street. Riders are advised to use the temporary stop located at Sidney Street at Green Street. Normal service at the regular stops is expected to resume tomorrow.
Roadwork and Bridge Closures
On the roads, MassDOT continues to manage several long-term infrastructure projects that are impacting local traffic patterns. In the Hyde Park area, the Canterbury Street Bridge remains closed to all vehicular traffic following a recent safety inspection. A primary detour is in effect using Hyde Park Avenue, Cummins Highway, Rowe Street, Brown Avenue, and Seymour Street. Drivers should allow for an additional 10 to 15 minutes when traveling through this corridor.
Furthermore, those using MBTA parking lots should exercise caution and patience. Official notices indicate that ongoing snow removal operations are still reducing the total number of available spaces at various suburban and city stations. Commuters are encouraged to arrive earlier than usual to secure a spot or consider alternative drop-off arrangements.
Ongoing Subway Delays
- Red Line: Residual delays of approximately 15 minutes have been reported this morning following the removal of disabled trains from earlier in the service cycle.
- Green Line E Branch: Service is proceeding but remains slow due to the aftermath of a vehicle accident on the right-of-way between Back of the Hill and Riverway.
- Blue Line: Minor signal problems near Beachmont have caused intermittent 15-minute standing times for inbound trains.
Finally, the MassDOT Board of Directors is holding its monthly meeting today at 10:00 AM at 10 Park Plaza. While this meeting does not involve road closures, increased activity around the Park Plaza area may cause minor pedestrian and vehicle congestion during the midday hours.
